  3.     Even more offensive than the cowardly act of Republican
  4. National Committee Chairman Lee Atwater and his cronies'
  5. implying that Speaker of the House Thomas Foley is a homosexual
  6. (NATION, June 19) is the fact that on Capitol Hill this is
  7. considered an effective smear.

  11.     I would like it to be understood that I did not threaten to
  12. publicly name gay Republicans in general. There is no list. I
  13. referred only to those gay people who shamefully use the fact
  14. or accusation of homosexuality as a weapon against others. It
  15. is this smaller subset of people who seem to me deserving of
  16. exposure, not for their sexuality but for their hypocrisy.

  22. Accompanying your main story was a brief commentary describing
  23. R.N.C. Chairman Atwater as a "muck maven" and calling on
  24. President Bush to "sack" him. This should have been identified
  25. as editorial opinion.
